Dorset teenager may have leg amputated because of ingrowing toenail

An 18-year-old teenager is asking for her leg to be amputated because of the pain caused by an ingrown toenail.

Hannah Moore from Stalbridge in Dorset was on track to become one of England's best competitors in karate, but she has had to put her dreams on hold after surgery for an ingrown toenail caused a rare disease.

She now believes having her leg amputated will be the only way to get her life back.

Hannah underwent surgery for an ingrowing toenail on her right foot at the age of 16.

She then developed complex regional pain syndrome which forces her to take 40 pills a day to limit the pain. It's disease that affects nerve endings and leads to painful ulcers.

The CRPS UK charity has been helping her come to terms with it.

From being a black belt in Washinkai karate and national competition championship winner at the age of 15, her future in the sport has been damaged.

But there is still hope of a sporting career ahead as Hannah is now training to become a wheelchair athlete after the local Lions club raised £3000 towards a light racing wheelchair.

Hannah says despite years of competing at Karate her decision to amputate is final but it is a controversial decision, not all surgeons will agree to it. >Her next step is to organise the operation so she can leave behind most of the pain and the weekly trips to London for a general anaesthetic.
