Travel disruption expected on morning commute after closure of Bath to Bristol railway line

Passengers travelling on one of the busiest railway lines in the West are being loaded onto replacement buses while electrification work takes place.

The main line between Bath and Bristol has already been closed since Saturday and will stay shut until next Sunday.

The work at Keynsham railway station is affecting travel into the region as well as around it.

The engineering works are part of a strategy to prepare the Great Western Main Line for the arrival of longer, faster and green electric trains.

They include lowering the tracks, platform modifications and installing overhead electric cable as part of the £40 billion 'Railway Upgrade Plan'.

Passengers are being advised to check before they travel through National Rail Enquiries or train operator, GWR.

Travel disruption details

  • Buses are replacing trains between Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa

  • A revised service is operating from Bath Spa to Bristol Temple Meads

  • Oldfield Park and Keynsham stations are closed

  • Between Bristol Temple Meads and Paddington one train is running each hour and not calling at Bath Spa or Chippenham.

  • Between Bath Spa and Paddington one train is running each hour stopping at Chippenham.

  • Trains between Weymouth and Bristol Temple Meads will start and end at Bath Spa.

  • Trains between Portsmouth and Cardiff Central will start and end at Swindon where passengers should change for services to Bristol Parkway and South Wales.

  • A service will run every 30 minutes between Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central.

Replacement Bus Services

  • Bath Spa - Bristol Temple Meads non-stop running every 15 minutes with a journey time of 50 minutes.

  • Bath Spa - Oldfield Park - Keynsham - Bristol Temple Meads running every 30 minutes

  • Keynsham - Bristol Temple Meads running every 30 minutes

  • Castle Cary - Bristol Temple Meads running 2 services in the morning and 2 services in the evening

  • Frome - Bath Spa - Bristol Temple Meads running Saturdays and Sundays only
