South West's rail upgrade faces four year delay
Network Rail has revealed that the biggest ever upgrade to the region's rail network will be up to four years late.
It means a promise to end overcrowding and speed up journey times has again been delayed.
The project cost has risen from around £800 million to £2.8 billion, with Network Rail saying the project is more complex than it first thought.
It means new trains, including the new Hitachi bullet trains, may be left sitting in the sidings and electrifying the line from Paddington to Bristol will be put back to 2019.
Any hopes of faster journeys from Devon and Cornwall to London, will be put years behind schedule and it also means that plans for extra carriages on many branch lines in the West Country and particularly around Exeter will also be delayed.
