More South West hospitals on Black Alert

Yeovil Hospital, Southmead Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and Weston General Hospital have announced that they are on black alert.

Some operations have been cancelled and the A&E departments are facing intense pressure.

Health leaders are urging people to use A&E only for genuine life-threatening emergencies, following a surge in numbers seeking emergency care across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

Local health service partners are working closely together to manage demand and recover capacity, such as calling in additional staff and opening up extra beds wherever possible.

Yeovil Hospital tweeted that there was an unusual level of people needed help at their A&E department earlier today (5 January).

Local people are also being encouraged to do their bit by using the most appropriate services for their needs.
