Five people have been arrested after clashes between Swindon football fans and police before a match against Oxford United on Tuesday night.

Swindon Town FC were visiting Oxford for the away game.

A number of disturbances were reported.

Botley Road was closed as scuffles broke out and flares were thrown.

Police in riot gear and mounted on horses made the arrests for alcohol-related and public disorder.

One onlooker told ITV News how he and his little girls had to run away from the disturbance:

Police calmed the situation and five arrests were made:

  • 41 year old man from Swindon - arrested on suspicion of affray

  • 42 year old man from Swindon - arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a class A drug

  • 47 year old man from Swindon - arrested on suspicion of affray

  • 45 year old man from Calne, Wiltshire - arrested on suspicion of violent disorder

  • 19 year old from Oldham - arrested and cautioned for being drunk and disorderly
