UWE student becomes World #1 in squash

UWE student Mohamed Elshorbagy won the U.S Open on Sunday

After smashing the competition in the final of the U.S Open this weekend, squash player Mohamed Elshorbagy has been made the World #1.

The 23 year old beat four-time World Champion Amr Shabana to secure his title. It took just 46 minutes for him to take the top spot, beating his opponent 3-1. The result catapulted him to #1 on the World Rankings for the first time in his career.

The Bristol-based athlete is originally from Egypt, but attended Millfield School in Somerset before gaining a scholarship to the University of West England. He is currently studying for an MSc in Finance through UWE’S High Performance Athlete Programme.
