German sea mine blown up

Milford Haven Port Authority is preparing to help with the controlled detonation of a large German naval mine discovered at the weekend on the bed of the Milford Haven waterway just off Watwick Point. MHPA is working with the Coastguard, Police and Navy Bomb Disposal Team to clear the mine.

The Port Authority will take full precautions to make sure the water is safe for the operation by sending two patrol boats to the area, along with two police patrol boats, to ensure there are no leisure boats nearby. MHPA will also issue a navigational warning for all sailors.

The three ships due to sail out of the Haven this afternoon will do so before the detonation takes place. It is understood that the coastal path around Watwick Point may also be closed and that the Environment Agency has been informed.
