The Gwynedd home of Welsh poet Hedd Wyn will officially reopen today after a multi-million pound restoration.

Yr Ysgwrn, in the village of Trawsfynydd, has undergone repairs to its historic buildings and furniture, with a new exhibition and visitors' centre also built.

Hedd Wyn won the Chair of the National Eisteddfod at Birkenhead in 1917 - but six weeks before being announced as the winner, he was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele, aged just 30 years old.

Today's date was chosen because as well as marking the centenary year of his death, it is a hundred years to the day since his poem 'Yr Arwr' ('The Hero') was announced as the winner at the Eisteddfod.

The farmhouse was awarded a £3 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant as part of the First World War commemorations. It also received a further £300,000 from the Welsh Government.

Yr Ysgwrn will be officially opened later this morning by First Minister Carwyn Jones.
