Esther Rantzen appeals for more Childline volunteers in Wales

Dame Esther Rantzen will appeal for more Childline volunteers in Wales, as she visits Cardiff to mark 30 years since the launch of the counselling service.

Dame Esther, who founded Childline in 1986, will meet with volunteers, fundraisers and Assembly Members at the Senedd.

Wales currently has 175 Childline volunteers across two bases in Cardiff and Prestatyn. Last year more than 7,600 children in Wales contacted the service seeking help, advice and support.

Low self-esteem, family relationships and self-harm were the some of the most common concerns raised with volunteers, while bullying and online bullying accounted for nearly 500 calls and online contacts.

Dame Esther's visit to Cardiff will form part of a nationwide tour of Childline centres to mark the free helpline's 30th birthday.
