Marks and Spencer change England Euro poster after outrage from Welsh fans

A high street retailer has been forced to change a poster appearing to back England's Euro 2016 squad after incurring the wrath of Welsh football fans.

Marks & Spencer has come under fire over the poster in its store in Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff, saying it is the official suit supplier to Roy Hodgson's team.

Twitter user Rhydian Bowen Phillips, who was among the first to post a picture of M&S's advert in the Welsh capital, said he was stunned when he saw the poster.

He said: "Did they forget that Wales has its own team and has qualified? Talk about bad publicity!"

Also voicing their surprise was Plaid Cymru Assembly Member and Cardiff City fan Neil McEvoy who said: "Last time I checked Culverhouse Cross was in Wales."

The image - which features England players Kyle Walker, Chris Smalling and Joe Hart - has further riled supporters of the Welsh national team.

JD Sports and Mars have also received criticism for their "England-centric" promotions in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, JD Sports' store in Cardiff Bay drew complaints after putting up giant posters of a young boy wearing an England shirt - before speedily replacing them with an image of the Wales home top instead.

Euro 2016 marks the first time that the Wales football team have been at a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.However, Welsh supporters claim the feat has been overlooked by a number of leading retailers.

And Welsh football fans have called for a boycott of confectionery firm Mars after claims the food giant snubbed Chris Coleman's team by announcing its support for England.

In its new advert, England footballers, monarchs, corgis and knights stride through the water to arrive on the beaches of France.

Wales will play England in the group stages - alongside Russia and Slovakia.

Marks and Spencer said it has since apologised for "any offence caused" and says the poster has now been changed.
