Trench built at Powis Castle in centenary year of the Somme

The exhibition runs until September.

A temporary trench has been created at Powis Castle to mark a hundred years since the Battle of the Somme.

The exhibit also serves as a tribute to the heir of the castle who never had the chance to inherit his property.

Percy, Viscount Clive enlisted to fight in the Great War and was the 13th new officer of the Welsh Guards.

But he was shot in the leg by a machine gun bullet while on duty, and despite being brought back to the UK for an operation, died from blood poisoning 25 days later.

Percy, Viscount Clive, died from blood poisoning following an operation after being shot.

The trench itself now holds reminders of what it was like to be a front line soldier at the time, complete with duckboards, graffiti, an officers dug out, sandbags and barbed wire.

The exhibition runs until September.
