Six year old girl creates world's longest loom band
A schoolgirl from Cardiff has put herself in the record books by creating the longest loom band in the world. Lorna Prichard reports.
Lara Yacob, aged six, set herself the challenge after picking up the Guiness Book of Records in her local library. She discovered the longest loom band ever created was 753 metres long - and was determined to beat it.
The determined youngster spent every spare moment in the next month making her loom band. It took her 27 days and 225 packets of loom bands to finish it.
Getting into the record books was no mean feat. Sometimes Lara's fingers would ache so she would rest or use talcum powder to soothe them. And her mum Asil Amin says the youngster's challenge wasn't cheap with hundreds of loom band packets costing them more than £200.
Finally it was completed. It was then laid along a road and measured by an official from Guinness World Records. It's 1,089 metres long.
Lara's loom band was measured last October but she had to wait several months before official confirmation came back that she was the new record holder.
Lara's nine-year-old brother Layth says he's very impressed at what his little sister had achieved. He said: "I couldn't believe my eyes. I looked at the world record certificate and I was really amazed." Her mum and dad are very proud too.
The giant loom band will now be donated to the charity Velindre to raise funds for cancer care. As for Lara - she's started a new loom band...
