Dad-to-be hit by taxi walking home from rugby match
A father-to-be was accidentally killed by a taxi when he tried to walk six miles home after a rugby match, an inquest in Swansea has heard.
Rugby player Rhodri Roberts, 29, was lying in the road when he was struck by a taxi driver.
Rhodri had been out drinking after playing a game.
The inquest heard he had been at the clubhouse at the Maesteg Harlequins in Maesteg.
He then decided to walk the six miles home to his partner Kaye Coleman who was six months pregnant with their first child.
But he was struck by the taxi driver who mistook his body for a "bin bag" in the road.
The inquest at Swansea Civic Centre prop Rhodri had a blood alcohol level of 275miligrams per 100 mililitres of blood, almost three and a half times the drink drive limit.
The coroner said: "It would be speculation to suggest the alcohol may have affected the decision making process of Rhodri resulting in him lying down on an unlit road with such tragic circumstances."
The coroner ruled Rhodri, of Glyncorrwg, near Port Talbot, died as a result of a road traffic accident.
