A little girl's Christmas letters to Santa have been found up a chimney after almost 80 years.

Christine Humphreys, 82, was just five when she wrote the heartwarming letter asking for a hymn book, a box of crayons and a dolly case.

One handwritten letter beginning: "Dear Father Xmas," was found during works to an old fireplace where it was sent up in 1938.

It continues: "Please bring me some nice toys and a hymn book, age 5, love Christine."

The letters were found in what is now a bathroom at the Grade II-listed Garthmyl Hall, in Powys, Mid Wales, as new owners renovated the building.

The building, near the village of Berriew, Powys, was owned by Christine's family - the Humphreys' - from 1883 until 1995.

Christine, who married and is now called Christine Churchill, was tracked down after the letters were found and spoke of her Christmas just before the outbreak of World War II.

Christine explained she asked for a hymn book as she lived with her religious family at the home which was built in the 17th Century including her grandfather, who was a vicar.
