A North Wales pensioner thought to be the oldest man in Wales has died at the age of 108.

Sam Ledward, of Gwernaffield near Mold, led a remarkable and unexpectedly long life, after being declared 'dead' in 1936 following a serious motorcycle accident. The front wheel of his 500cc Triumph motorbike burst, and he fell into a coma so deep that doctors thought he had died.

But as his body was being moved to the mortuary, a porter noticed he had started to move. Mr Ledward was rushed back to the hospital ward where he made a full recovery, going onto live for an additional 79 years.

Sam, who worked as joiner for most of his life, was born in Cheshire in 1906. He lived with his late wife Edith in Blackpool until she passed away in 1993, after which he moved to Wales.
