Children denied a 'decent childhood' by poverty in Wales

Wales' new Children's Commissioner, Professor Sally Holland, says too many children are being denied a decent childhood because of the effects of child poverty.

Her comments come as all four UK Children's Commissioners prepare to address the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child today.

Professor Holland says although some progress has been made, the inequality among children is still a major cause for concern, with a third of children in Wales living in poverty - a statistic she says is 'unacceptably high'.

While Professor Holland has praised the Welsh Government's child poverty plan, she says their programmes do not have a wide enough reach.

The Welsh Government say welfare reforms and austerity measures have been very detrimental for disadvantaged children, but that their approach to tackling child poverty is yielding results.
