Celebrations for 150th anniversary of the Welsh colony in Patagonia
It's a 150 years since a ship left Liverpool carrying emigrants from Wales to Patagonia.
The Merseyside Welsh Heritage Society is holding a number of events to mark the anniversary and the sailing of Mimosa in 1865.
The ship left Liverpool with over 150 settlers on board. Their aim was to save the Welsh culture and language which they believed was under threat in their native Wales.
Life in Patagonia was to prove extremely challenging for the early settlers.
The colony endured great poverty and hardships, such as drought and floods, as they struggled to make a living from the land.
But, in time, the community thrived and today there's believed to be around 50,000 people from Welsh descent living there.
A range of events are being held including the unveiling of a memorial plinth at Liverpool’s famous waterfront to mark the voyage of the Mimosa.
The Library and Archives Service will be celebrating the anniversary with an exhibition displaying a selection of material from the Archives and Rare Books Collections.
