PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Drew Harris has been appointed as head of An Garda Síochána.

Irish Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan welcomed the appointment, while PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton wished the new Garda Commissioner “every success”.

Drew Harris, whose father was killed in an IRA bomb in 1989, has been a police officer for 34 years and served as the Chief Constable’s deputy for the last four.

“While there is no doubt that the Police Service of Northern Ireland will be a poorer place without his contribution, he will remain a colleague when he takes over the leadership of An Garda Síochána,” Mr Hamilton said.

“This appointment can only serve to build on what is already a close working relationship between the PSNI and An Garda Síochána.

“The mutual desire of both organisations to keep people safe will support us in overcoming the many challenges we jointly face, including Brexit.”

Mr Harris was shortlisted with five other candidates for the top Garda role.

He will now be responsible for the general direction of the service for five years and will receive a salary of €250,000.

It was increased from €180,000 in order to attract interest in the position.
