Aleppo evacuation operation 'in last stages'

The evacuation of civilians and rebels from eastern Aleppo is in its "last stages," the International Committee of the Red Cross has said.

Around 34,000 people have been evacuated in the week-long rescue operation.

Over 4,000 rebel fighters left between Wednesday and Thursday to rebel-held western rural Aleppo, as per an agreement reached with the government.

Thousands are expected to be evacuated as the rescue operation continues throughout Friday, a Red Cross spokeswoman said.

TV captures scale of mass exodus of Aleppo refugees

The scale of the mass human exodus in Aleppo has been captured in remarkable TV footage.

Thousands of Syrians were filmed streaming along the city streets, carrying babies in arms and pushing the elderly and injured in wheelchairs, as Assad forces close in on taking full control of the city.

Syrian TV cameras filmed the refugees walking through an area of the city long held by government forces, with whatever possessions they could carry.

The International Committee for the Red Cross has appealed for all sides to spare civilian life as the Syrian army advances towards the last few districts still held by rebel fighters.
