Turkey has detained 35,000 people over failed coup
Turkish authorities have detained a total of 35,022 people on suspicion of involvement in last month's failed coup attempt, officials have announced.
A total of 17,740 of that number have since been formally arrested, of which 5,685 remain in police custody, the official said.
More than 270 people were killed in the attempted overthrow of the government on July 15 led by some sections of the military.
President Tayyip Erdogan has since overseen a crackdown in which media outlets have been closed and thousands dismissed from the armed forces.
