An eyewitness told the South Wales Argus that he pulled a man from the rubble of the building shortly after the blast on George Street.
Jordan Reynolds said he and a woman dragged the man out of the front window.
A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said crews were called to the blast at 7.32pm.
He added: "The cause of the incident is subject to an ongoing investigation by the Police and Wales and West utilities. Three people were taken to hospital".
People in the nearby area were evacuated shortly after the 'serious incident' but it is believed that they are now being allowed to return to their homes.
