Stats: Chelsea captain should not get England recall

While he stopped short of suggesting John Terry may be recalled by the Three Lions, Roy Hodgson was willing to admit the Chelsea captain could give England more balance in defence.

England's shortage of left-sided centre-backs is a cause for concern heading into Euro 2016, and had the tournament been staged this time last year, when Terry was enjoying a stunning campaign, there may have been a case for his reinstatement.

The Premier League stats for this campaign, provided by Oulala, paint an entirely different picture, and one where it's difficult to argue that Terry's form merits a place in England's plans.

Compared with the four defenders named in Hodgson's squad to face Germany and the Netherlands, Terry is either fourth or fifth best in every department from blocks, clearances, tackles won, aerial duels won and interceptions.

Chris Smalling, who is likely to scoop all of Man United's end-of-season accolades, tops the latter three of these categories, while Phil Jagielka comes out strongest with blocks and clearances. Should the Man United and Everton duo form England's first choice defensive partnership?
