Adam Johnson told police he had "no feelings" for his 15-year-old sex accuser - but later admitted it was a lie.

Asked about his statement to officers, his lawyer asked: "No feelings - was that the truth?" "No," he replied.

"Why did you not tell the truth?" his lawyer continued.

"My world was turned upside down. I was trying to play it down as much as I could," Johnson said.

He told the court of the moment, on his release from questioning, that he told his partner Stacey Flounders of the accusations against him.

"I can't describe how hard it was, how bad it was."

"What did you tell her?" his barrister asked. "Everything," Johnson said.

Johnson's lawyer concluded his questions by asking him about the specific allegations of sexual activity being made against them. One by one he denied them.

He will now be cross-examined by the prosecution.
