Russia denies 'war crime' claim after fatal hospital airstrikes

The Kremlin has rejected claims that Russia has committed a 'war crime' stating accusations it was behind the bombing of a hospital in Syria are "unfounded".

It comes after Turkey accused Russia of an "obvious war crime" yesterday after almost 50 civilians were thought to have been killed in missile attacks in northern Syria.

The attacks took place in the Idlib province and Azaz near the Turkish border.

US condemns deadly airstrikes in northern Syria

The United States has condemned air strikes believed to have carried out by the Syrian government and its supporters against civilian targets in northern Syria.

Nearly 50 civilians are thought to have been killed in the attacks on at least five medical facilities and two schools in the towns of Idlib and Azaz.

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said continuation of the attacks "flies in the face of the unanimous calls by the ISSG (International Syria Support Group), including in Munich, to avoid attacks on civilians".

He added that it "casts doubt on Russia's willingness and/or ability to help bring to a stop the continued brutality of the Assad regime against its own people".

The State Department also reiterated its call for all parties to end attacks against civilians and to allow humanitarian relief supplies to reach the people who need them.
