British astronaut Tim Peake boards International Space Station

British astronaut Tim Peake and two colleagues have been welcomed aboard the International Space Station after a six-hour journey from Kazakhstan.

No Brit has undertaken such a mission - or even left Earth - in more than two decades.

Mr Peake will be onboard the ISS for six months.

Rituals carried out ahead of Peake space mission

Tim Peake and his fellow crew members have carried out a number of rituals ahead of Tuesday morning's launch to the International Space Station.

Among them was signing their hotel room door, joining the names of many others that have gone before them.

Major Peake, Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra were then blessed by Russian orthodox priests - another tradition in which the crew are sprinkled with holy water.

Crews boarding the International Space Station also carry out several other strange rituals before every mission.
