All hostages are now reportedly safe following an incident in the northern French town of Roubaix near the Belgian border.

Police sources said that the incident appeared to be robbery-related and was not thought to be linked to the Paris terror attacks on 13 November.

"This is apparently not a terrorist attack, it's apparently a robbery," one police source said.

Reuters initially reported several people suffered gunshot wounds during the incident.

A source said:

An operation is underway after hostages were taken.

Gunshots were fired and the neighbourhood has been cordoned off.

A bank director and his family may have been taken as hostages.
