Colonel Gilles Jaron, a spokesman for the French military, said that around 60 bombs had been dropped at six sites, targeting the terror group’s command centres and training sites.

He said the aim of the latest airstrikes was to weaken Isis and erode its ability to organisation.

France was already part of the US-led coalition against Isis in Syria and Iraq, but has sharply increased actions in response to the terror attacks last Friday which claimed at least 129 lives and wounded hundreds of others.

The Charles de Gaulle nuclear-powered aircraft carrier ship left on Wednesday for the eastern Mediterranean, tripling France's airborne forces in the fight against the Islamist terror group.
