Tory MP warns party over planned tax credit cuts

Pressure has mounted on Chancellor George Osborne to give way on plans to cut tax credits for low-paid workers, as a succession of Conservative MPs stood up in Parliament on Tuesday to voice their misgivings.

New Tory MP Heidi Allen used her maiden speech in the House of Commons to warn that the changes go "too hard and too fast", and that it was "real people, working people" who would be affected.

Osborne 'unlikely' to change plans to cut tax credits

Chancellor George Osborne is unlikely to change his plans to cut tax credits but is in "full listening mode", ITV News understands.

Osborne was challenged by some Tory backbenchers on the controversial cuts during a meeting of the 1922 Committee.

But after the meeting, ITV News' Chris Ship said Osborne was unlikely to make any changes to his plans but may look at some form of mitigation in his Autumn Statement.

The mitigation could include tapering the policy or looking at National Insurance levels.

The changes, which have been opposed by Labour, are due to come into effect in April.
