Voting has started in Greece's general election, which could see Syriza party leader Alexis Tsipras re-elected a month after resigning as prime minister.

Polls indicate a tight race between the conservative New Democracy party, led by Vangelis Meimarakis and Tsipras's Syriza. Neither party is expected to get enough votes to form a majority government.

The Greek leader announced his resignation in August, saying it was up to voters to judge whether he adequately represented them in a battle with foreign lenders on austerity demands. The Syriza party accepted an EU bailout deal they had previously vowed to oppose.

The winner will need to oversee deep economic reforms, managing the €86bn bailout fund and recapitalisation of the country's banks.

This is the country's fifth election in only six years as citizens struggle to cope with the impact of austerity measures. The polls will close at 16:00 GMT, with the first projected results expected two hours later.
