PM urges EU nations to fund refugee camps around Syria

David Cameron has visited camps in Lebanon and Jordan to meet Syrian refugees who have fled their country's civil war.

The Prime Minister has called on other EU countries to "step up to the plate" and follow Britain's lead by funding refugee camps around Syria.

Mr Cameron said there was a "direct connection" between shortfalls in aid for camps in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey and the influx of migrants into Europe.

Greece requests emergency EU help amid refugee crisis

Authorities in Greece have requested emergency help from the European Union to help deal with the huge influx of migrants and refugees arriving on its eastern islands each day.

Since the start of the year, more than 230,000 people have arrived on boats - most of them having travelled from nearby Turkey.

The Interior Ministry said it had applied for 'civil protection assistance' to be activated, to give officials the means of improving the rudimentary migrants' reception centres currently in use.

The cash would go towards pharmaceutical supplies, clothing, staff and equipment.
