HMS Bulwark rescues 1,000 in one day in largest operation to date

The crew of Royal Navy vessel HMS Bulwark have rescued more than 1,000 migrants in just one day in their largest operation to date.

In one operation at least 10 pregnant women were saved. The latest mission brings the total number of people rescued by the ship to 2,700.

Migrant quotas based on GDP and unemployment rate

EU countries will be asked to accept a quota of migrants, officials confirmed today in attempt to deal with the crisis in the Mediterranean.

It is designed as an emergency measure to try and ease the pressure on some of the countries on the frontline, most notably Greece, Italy and Malta.

The quota will be determined along lines of GDP, population size, unemployment rate and past numbers of asylum seekers and of resettled refugees.

However no figures for individual countries have yet been released.

The Home Secretary has already opposed the quota system, calling for a focus on the fight against people traffickers.
