Up to 250 missing after second avalanche hits Nepal

Up to 250 people are missing after an avalanche hit the popular trekking area of Rasuwa in Nepal, north of capital city Kathmandu, the district governor has said.

Uddhav Bhattari said foreign tourists may be among the missing, who were caught up in the snowslide as it hit Ghodatabela village.

Bad weather including heavy rain is hampering efforts to find them, he added.

It comes just days after a powerful earthquake in the country triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 18 people and injuring dozens more, leaving hundreds of climbers stranded as it destroyed the Khumbu icefall, used as a route down.

The earthquake has killed more than 4,400 people in total to date, and has triggered a number of further landslips.
