Three people found alive days after Nepal earthquake

Three people have been pulled out alive from the rubble of their home days after Nepal's devastating earthquake, an official has said.

Other developments include:

  • The number of confirmed deaths has risen to more than 8,000, an official from Nepal's home ministry said.
  • The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is appealing for donations to help get aid to Nepal after the devastating earthquake. Visit www.dec.org.uk for details.

Nepal: UK pledges £5 million to earthquake relief effort

International Development Secretary Justine Greening has announced £5 million in UK funding to contribute towards the Nepal earthquake relief effort, it has been announced.

Earlier today, Justine Greening chaired a Cobra emergency meeting to discuss the UK's response to the Nepal earthquake.

The £5m package of UK support in response to the Nepal earthquake includes:

  • £3m released under the Rapid Response Facility (RRF) so partners can address immediate needs on the ground; and
  • £2m for the British Red Cross.
