Up to 90% of housing in Vanuatu's capital city Port Vila has been "seriously damaged" by Cyclone Pam according to Oxfam Australia.

In a statement the aid organisation added that the number of dead following the storm, which officially stands at eight, is likely to rise when communication channels with remote islands are re-established.

Oxfam Country Director in Port Vila, Colin Collet van Rooyen, said: "This is likely to be one of the worst disasters ever seen in the Pacific.

"The scale of humanitarian need will be enormous and the proud people of Vanuatu are going to need a lot of help to rebuild their homes and their lives.

"Entire communities have been blown away."

CARE International Programme Manager, Charlie Damon, told APTN making contact with the outer island communities was essential.
