Cyclone Pam ripped through the archipelago of islands last weekend, with winds of up to 155 mph and heavy rainfall destroying 90% of the buildings in the capital of Port Vila.

At least 70,000 children are said to be out of school following the devastation of Cyclone Pam, according to new figures.

According to UNICEF, schools across Vanuatu have been damaged by the category 5 storm or are being used as evacuation centres - meaning thousands of young people are missing out on education.

A spokesperson said: “We are particularly concerned about their health, nutrition, safety, schooling and recovery.

“The winds were incredibly strong, ripping off roofs, destroying homes and damaging hospitals and schools. Countless homes have been torn apart and communities have been left in ruins.”
