The X Factor boss told Good Morning Britain: "You know what, I like Jeremy. I mean he has said some stupid things and he knows that and he's apologised.
"But I think what is quite obvious is that the public are behind him, but you know, that's Jeremy."
The Top Gear presenter is due to appear before a disciplinary panel later.
An online petition to reinstate him has now reached more than 800,000 signatures.
