Lord Brittan: Police probe 'ongoing' despite peer's death

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it will continue to review an historical allegation of rape against former Home Secretary Lord Brittan, despite the peer's death aged 75.

The Conservative peer died at his London home following a long battle with cancer, his family said.

He was recently caught up in a row over allegations that he failed to act on evidence of child abuse by senior figures in Westminster in the 1980s.

'Cloud' hung over Brittan after dossier claims, says MP

A "cloud" has hung over Lord Brittan for a long time following allegations he failed to act on evidence of child abuse in Westminster, a campaigner MP has said.

After offering his condolences to Lord Brittan's family, Simon Danczuk said the peer's death is a "loss" to the inquiry into alleged historical child abuse at the heart of the establishment.

"Sir Leon's (Lord Brittan's) untimely death is also a loss to the inquiry that the Home Secretary ordered into establishment child abuse," the Labour MP for Rochdale said.

"Only this morning we were debating the lack of progress in the inquiry and Sir Leon is someone who should have faced questions and been compelled to give evidence to the inquiry over his role as home secretary in the 1980s when a dossier containing allegations of establishment child abuse was handed to him.

"It's fair to say that a cloud has hung over him for a long time."
