Obama admits Republicans had 'a good night'

President Barack Obama has conceded that the Republican party had a "good night" after they secured a majority in the US Senate in last night's midterm elections.

He said that the message from last night was that voters want to see the Washington gridlock eased.

Mr Obama will now face both a Senate and House of Representatives controlled by his political opponents, potentially scuppering any ambitions he has of pushing through his domestic agenda in the final two years of his presidency.

America goes to the polls in midterm elections

Americans across all 50 states are going to the polls today, to vote for their members of congress - essentially their version of parliament.

The results of these crucial midterms could spell disaster for President Obama.
