Despite a global campaign to save his life, Excalibur was euthanised following a court order that allowed officials to retrieve the dog from Teresa Romero Ramos' apartment in Madrid.

According to the site, Madrid's Department of Health said it had "complied this afternoon with the resolution that called for the euthanasia of the dog belonging to the patient diagnosed with Ebola.

"The animal was sedated beforehand to avoid suffering," they said.

An online petition to keep Excalibur alive has reached 300,000 signatures, while protesters also camped outside the apartment block calling for the dog to be saved.
