Economic spokesman Patrick O'Flynn said it "makes no sense" that budget goods attract the same rate of VAT as big ticket items that only the wealthy can afford.

"I would suggest such a rate be built around simple thresholds such as £200 for a pair of shoes, £1,000 for a bag or £50,000 for a new car," Mr O'Flynn explained.

Among other measures the party is looking at is a "turnover tax" to stop multinational companies avoiding tax.
