Man dies after becoming impaled on 20ft spike railing

A man has died after becoming impaled on a 20ft spike as he was gardening, police said.

Peter Davies, 67, fell onto the decorative spear railing as he chopped branches off a fir tree at his home in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales.

A neighbour raised the alarm and tried to save the pensioner's life before paramedics arrived but it was too late and he later died of severe blood loss.

A South Wales Police spokesman said they were treating the death as a "tragic accident."
