Former opposition leader ahead in Afghan election

Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission said initial results based on 10 percent of the vote from 26 out of 34 provinces showed former opposition leader Abdullah Abdullah in the lead with 41.9 percent.

Seven million voters turn out for Afghanistan election

Turnout from Afghanistan's presidential election was seven million out of 12 million eligible voters, or about 58 percent, election commission chief Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani has said.

Nuristani told reporters the figure of seven million was based on preliminary estimates.
