There was a last minute reprieve on Tuesday when the 19-year-old was turned back by British Airways at Gatwick Airport and returned to a detention centre.

However, in a letter to Yashika's family, the Home Office said the family's case had been rejected, the teenager had no grounds for appeal and her mother would be deported alongside her.

Lynne Dawes, the head at Oasis Academy Hadley in Enfield, north London, explained that it may mean there is no longer any argument for Ms Bageerathi to remain in the UK.

The family fled Mauritius in 2012 to escape a relative who had been physically abusing Yashika.
