The USS Kid is being moved to the Indian Ocean to investigate the matter further although it will take 24 hours to move the ship into position, the official added.

The unnamed source claimed there were indications that the plane flew four or five hours after disappearing from the radar before crashing into the water.

Earlier the Malaysian transport minister said speculation that the aircraft continued flying for some time after its last contact were "inaccurate".
