Somerset village evacuated after flood defences breached

Marines and police have helped to evacuate residents in the Somerset village of Moorland after their flood defences were breached. One resident built a giant wall out of clay around his house to try to stem rising flood waters.

More rain forecast will cause River Tone to rise again

The Environment Agency said it will continue to pump water from the area around the Somerset village of Moorland, which is being evacuated, as rain forecast for tonight will see the nearby River Tone rise again.

The band of rain forecast for Friday night will cause the River Tone to rise again, resulting in more water going into the Currymoor and Northmoor area We continue to pump water at Northmoor and Saltmoor pumping stations.

The temporary defences and pumps that were installed to protect properties in Moorland are now being overwhelmed.

The emergency services are helping people evacuate from their homes in the local area.
