Higher radioactivity levels 'not attributable' to Sellafield site

The operators of the Sellafield nuclear site have said that elevated levels of radioactivity detected this morning are 'not attributable' to any operations at the complex. All non-essential staff were asked to stay home this morning as a precaution.

Sellafield is largest nuclear complex in Europe

The Sellafield nuclear site is the largest nuclear complex in Europe - spread over six square kilometres (2.3 square miles) near the Cumbria coast.

The site employs more 10,000 people, accounting for almost half of the UK's total nuclear workforce.

Sellafield carries out a diverse range of functions including the reprocessing of spent fuel so it can be used again and the storage of untreated nuclear waste.
