Clegg: UK to admit 'most vulnerable' Syrian refugees

Syrian refugees will begin arriving in the UK in the next few months under a new scheme to provide relief to the most vulnerable, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said.

Those eligible to seek refuge here are expected to include torture survivors, women and girls who have experienced or are at risk of sexual violence and people with disabilities.

Britain will not join the UN sanctuary scheme, which seeks to resettle 30,000 vulnerable Syrians in western nations, but Mr Clegg said the government would work with the UN High Commission for Refugees on a case-by-case basis.

Home Secretary Theresa May will formally confirm the plans in a statement to the House of Commons tomorrow ahead of a debate on the subject.

No figure is being put on the number of displaced people the UK will take, but hundreds are expected to arrive in the coming months.
