Energy boss: 'More could have been done'

The boss of UK Power Networks, which supplies eight million homes in the South East, said more could have been done in response to the storms that hit Britain over Christmas, leaving many without power.

High winds cause extensive damage to power lines

Strong winds and heavy rain have damaged power lines in South East and East England.

UK Power Networks said around 70,000 customers are without power in the region.

The following numbers of customers are currently without power:

  • Kent: 28,530
  • Surrey: 17,230
  • Sussex: 11,975
  • Bedfordshire: 350
  • Buckinghamshire: 700
  • Cambridgeshire: 1,590
  • Essex: 1,807
  • Hertfordshire: 400
  • Norfolk: 3,160
  • Suffolk: 3,380
