World leaders enjoy colourful opening ceremony

World leaders watched a powerful ballet depicting the story of Sri Lanka's 1948 independence from Britain at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth leaders meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Dancers performed a few feet from the dignitaries using movement to express the struggles and triumphs of the nation, with one emerging from a giant shell.

The entrances to the auditorium were flanked by bare-chested men holding medieval weapons called halberds.
