'13 dead' as Libyan militias fire at protesters

Thirteen people were killed and more than 100 wounded in Tripoli today when militiamen opened fire on protesters calling for them to leave the Libyan capital, Reuters has reported citing Libyan state TV.

Libyan police and armed local residents battled to control the militiamen in an area on the road to Tripoli's international airport.

Many protesters were reportedly taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, while others continued marching on the militia brigade's headquarters.

Libya is struggling to contain scores of rival militia gangs and former fighters who refuse to disarm, with the country's nascent armed forces still in training and not able to challenge the heavily armed militias.
